Spring Sonnet

The lanes are lined with may as ne’er before.
What further proof is needed of rebirth?
The scents of spring my senses all restore
And fill my heart anew with love of earth.
Yet humans show such inhumanity,
Bombing and maiming indiscriminately:
War our ultimate insanity.

How can we reconcile what we’ve seen lately
With any claim that there’s a god of love –
Far less, redemption in a world above?
Yet comes the spring, and with it renewed hope.
(Who knows how parents mourning children cope?)
Words learnt in church I can no longer say,
Yet every spring restores my power to pray.
