Acrostic Sonnet for Jane Dodgson

Jane, whatever I say can’t capture the length
And depth of what you’ve meant to me. You stand
Now in the portal of transformation, strength
Ebbing until you receive your angel wings and
set out on your great last flight.

                                                           But this
is not the memory you leave: your insight,
love of truth in music, handed like legacies
Down to all you taught, remain alight
On altars in each heart.

                                           And this my tribute:
Derelict from the gutter, I’m what you raised me:
Grandkids you love now know you as the root
Soil from which they sprang. And, all amazed, we
Open our hearts in one last fond salute –
Now and forever may you praiséd be!
