Sonnets to Orpheus is a song-cycle in 21stC musical language. It sets 12 poems of great spiritual intimacy by Rainer Maria Rilke, whose timeless gifts are increasingly recognised as among the most significant of 20thC poets. Michael Maxwell Steer's music and translations, together with his original way of using characteristically jazz instruments (sax, piano, bass & percussion) create an extraordinary range of vivid musical sound-wrolds which float in the imagination.
