Bach 48 Fugues, Book II

Setting words to Bach's fugue subjects was a project suggested by those of the Victorian musicologist Ebenezer Prout's lyrics a century ago.

If you think it's \ easy: \ you've another thi-ink \ coming that will wipe the \ smile clean off your pretty face for good & \ all.

Cm

It's not my fault it's rather short: or that you get \ caught in a somer\sault.

Db

I'm pretty sure you \ did'nt anticipate the \ pauses I've put into this \ theme.

C#m

I'm in a hurry and don't care who knows it, I've / no time at all for your silly complaint!

D

This is a plod \ but still sounds lovely.

Dm

Rushing & dashing from morning till ni-ight, it seems I never \ get a moment to call my \ own.

Eb

Don't \ think it's \ over be\tween us, not for \ now or for\ever & a \ day.

Ebm

This is a dreary tale \ & long, which will drive you \ mad …

E

Of all the \ themes Bach could have chosen \ why did he choose this?

Em

Some would \ say that this fugue is quite, problematic\al enough – See \ how we bounce down\stairs & then land \ topsy-turvy & higgledy piggledy \ in a fine mess at the end!

F

Feel like a \ dance? Taking a \ chance? This the \ time for a whirlwind ro\ma-ance when all you \ have to do is \ hold on tight, & \ follow your partner \ round.

Fm

My \ subject here is \ marathon around the \ city streets & open country, \ up & down the hills till you're com\pletely out of breath … I could go on …

F#

Oh / yes! This will \ sort all you rubber-fingered \ pianists out for centu\ries to come.

F#m

I've had enough \ of this precious count\e-erpoint to last \ to the end of time.

G

Gosh this is fun, I \ never thought that fugues could \ go so fast, I'm feeling \ dizzy but I love it. \ Hang on here we go a\gain, it's changing all the \ time before you know it. \ Whoa! I've had enough but \ still it isn't going to \ stop.

Gm

Now!  Just \ listen, you \ peasant!  I'll \ say it one more time in \ case you're deaf or just an \ eejit.

Ab

This is a serious fugue as \ you can all tell, because the subject is a \ lo-o-o-ong one.

G#m

Need practice playing on \ black notes with more double \ sharps than is fair? Then I've \ got just the movement for \ you!

A

It's another day, another fugue, but hey \ even JS would sometimes like to take a break.

Am

I've had e\nough! These fugues have \ gone on far too long. I'm about to pop: if it doesn't \ stop for just a quarter hour, Im gonna drop the whole darn \ lot. Just wait & see: I do not joke: I’ll drop the lot right down your throat.

Bb

I'm fairy twinkle-\toes, I dance the light fan\ta-asti-ic, a-and \ never pu-ut a-a \ single foot \ wrong all night \ long.

Bbm

JS! You \ are the boss! The \ feats you pull off using double invertible \ counterpoint - exceed the \ fingers of both hands.

B

This fugue's \ not the \ longest \ one, but it's as \ devilish as they \ come.

Bm

I \ wonder what's \ last? Could it be a \ difficult \ fugue that he's \ saved to the \ end in the \ hope that you'll \ all have gone \ home long be\fore?
